A person was taken into custody from the venue of the swearing-in ceremony of the new Assam government allegedly with a few rounds of live bullets.

Notably, Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the Assam Chief Minister for a second consecutive term after the BJP-led NDA formed the government in the state for the third straight time.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma at Veterinary College Field in Khanapara in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah as well as several top BJP and NDA leaders.

According to police officials, the live bullets were recovered from the man during security screening at the entrance of the venue. “He was taken into custody for questioning. He is being taken to Basistha police station,” PTI quoted an official as saying.

However, no arms were recovered from the individual.

As of now, investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the recovery and whether any security threat was involved.

As per reports, the arrest was made minutes before the event started.

Apart from Sarma, five Ministers were also sworn in to the new Council of Ministers. Among these included former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Charan Boro as well as senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog.

Also present at the venue were Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, besides BJP national leaders and Chief Ministers from 22 NDA-ruled states.
